Finasteride is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), such as frequent and difficult urination. Besides this, it is also used to treat male pattern hair loss.
Finasteride contains Finasteride, which works by blocking the action of male hormones that cause prostate enlargement and hair loss. Thereby, it helps treat BPH and male pattern hair loss.
In some cases, Finasteride may cause low sexual desire, impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, or trouble having an orgasm. Most of these side effects of Finasteride may not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.
Do not take Finasteride if you are allergic to any of its components. Finasteride is not intended for use in women and children. Keep the doctor informed about your health condition and medications to rule out any side effects/interactions.
Treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and male pattern hair loss.
Finasteride belongs to a class of medicines called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) in men with enlarged prostate. It also may decrease the need for prostate surgery. Additionally, it is also used to treat male pattern hair loss. Finasteride works by blocking the action of male hormones that cause the prostate to enlarge and hair loss.
• Finasteride can be taken with or without food. • It is usually taken once daily at the same time each day or as prescribed by your doctor. • Swallow Finasteride as a whole with a glass of water. • Do not crush, chew, or break it.

Methods:We compared the clinical efficacy of finasteride and placebo in the treatment of BPH. Finasteride was given to 50% of patients with an enlarged prostatic size, whereas placebo was given to 50% of patients with no change in their size.
Results:There was no significant difference in the number of treatment attempts during the 1-year study period for finasteride and placebo groups in the 2-year study period (3.8 vs. 3.1, respectively). The proportion of patients with 1 treatment attempt (2.5 vs. 2.8, respectively) and the proportion of patients with more than 1 treatment attempt (2.8 vs. 3.1) were statistically higher in the finasteride group. In the placebo group, the number of treatment attempts was 3.7, and in the finasteride group 3.9, respectively, and the proportion of patients with 1 treatment attempt (2.5 vs. 2.8) was statistically higher.
Conclusions:Finasteride was effective in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, whereas placebo was effective in the treatment of BPH. Finasteride is a novel drug with a better safety profile than placebo.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. Finasteride has been shown to be more effective in patients with BPH than in healthy male volunteers. It was therefore concluded that finasteride is more effective in patients with BPH than in healthy male volunteers. In patients with BPH, finasteride has a better safety profile than placebo. In addition to clinical efficacy studies in BPH, it has also been shown that finasteride has a similar safety profile to placebo in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Finasteride is a potent inhibitor of type 1 and type 2 cyclic GMP (cGMP) receptors that is thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of BPH. However, its clinical effects are not consistent with these findings. Finasteride has been shown to decrease the severity of the disease in men with BPH.Male sexual function in men. The purpose of this article is to compare the clinical efficacy of the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor finasteride and placebo in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The results of this study will help to determine if finasteride is more effective than placebo in the treatment of BPH. If finasteride is effective in BPH, it may be used to treat BPH.The author would like to thank Dr. David S. Smith for his invaluable help in administering the study.
Financial support:The author declares that no financial support was provided. The funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript.
Conflicts of interest:The following are reported in the manuscript and may be subject to change: the author declares that the findings are of a clinical nature and that there is no evidence for a therapeutic effect on BPH. The author declares that there is no significant difference between finasteride and placebo in the clinical efficacy of the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor finasteride and the efficacy of placebo in the treatment of BPH.

Talk to your doctor or a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or are severe.
You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
While rare, these symptoms require immediate medical attention. This is not a complete list of side effects associated with finasteride. Studies have shown that finasteride can increase your risk of developing breast cancer or high-grade prostate cancer, which spreads and grows more rapidly than other types of prostate cancer.
Studies have also shown that Proscar can affect the results of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which may be used to detect prostate cancer. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider that you are taking finasteride so that they are aware of any medication interference with PSA testing.
Proscar is only for use in men and can cause birth defects in pregnant women. If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant and touch crushed or broken Proscar tablets, you should wash your hands and call your doctor right away.

Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat male pattern hair loss, and may improve prostate size and quality of life.
It’s approved to be used once a year to treat male pattern hair loss, and it’s also approved to treat other benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) conditions such as alopecia areata (analgesic) and dysentery.
The FDA’s first approved treatment for BPH, finasteride, will start in September 2021.
It’s also the first of its kind to treat BPH in men under the age of 60.
Finasteride is FDA-approved for the treatment of hair loss in men aged 18 and older. This treatment was first used by the Food and Drug Administration in 1992. The first treatment for BPH began in 1997. The FDA said it wants to treat male pattern hair loss in men over 60.
“Finasteride is approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and should not be used to treat hair loss in women,” said Kathleen Uhl, M. D., director of the FDA’s Office of Adverse Drug Interactions Program and the chief clinical officer of Proscar. “There are no drugs in this class that can stop or slow hair loss and this treatment is not FDA approved.”
“For the first time, men can take the pill and stop hair loss and start taking finasteride without any complications,” she said. “This means, in most cases, you can expect no more hair loss.”
“The first drug approved for BPH in men over 60 is finasteride. This drug has shown potential benefits in the treatment of hair loss in men with BPH,” said Uhl.
“It’s also been shown to be effective in reducing the number of prostate gland enlargement, which in many cases can lead to BPH,” she said. “As with any medication, it’s important to discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of finasteride in order to make sure this medication is right for you.”
“While finasteride can be effective in reducing BPH symptoms, it is not FDA approved for hair loss treatment in men,” Uhl said.

Federal officials are advising consumers not to buy or use Proscar products, including both brand and generic finasteride tablets or any product that contains the active ingredient finasteride. Proscar tablets are only approved to treat male pattern hair loss.“The FDA is advising consumers not to purchase or use finasteride,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA’s Office of Drug Safety. “While finasteride can be effective in reducing hair loss, it is not FDA approved for this purpose.”
“This is not an FDA approved treatment for hair loss in men,” said Woodcock. “This is not a treatment for hair loss in women, it is an FDA treatment for male pattern hair loss.”
The FDA has not received any new drug information related to finasteride, including a drug safety study that was halted in June 2021.
